How to tell if my Wii can read back up DVDs or movie DVDs in general?

  1. I’ve been searching like crazy with no luck. I tried analyzing the drive chip database but I don’t understand a thing. Please help.

    My results were:

    • There is a 50% chance the chipset is GC2-D4 on a smaller drive board.
    • And there is also a 25% chance the chipset is GC2-D2B (no cut pins or missing pad).
    • Lastly, a 25% chance the chipset is GC2-D3-2 (v2) with no drive chip.

  2. 75% chance it will not. D3 and higher do not support backup loading.

  3. Dang. Ok. Just curious, would an app (like WiiPlayer or whatever media player) be enough to suffice that the wii can’t play DVDs? I tried to do so, and the media player told me that the wii doesn’t read 3rd party DVDs.

  4. If you are talking about WiiMC the Homebrew app, then yes. Post a syscheck here in this thread (guide is below in my sig). It will tell the drive date. Mid 2009 and later will not read backup media.
