As stated in the headline, Nintendo has released system update 5.1.1 which fixes the browser exploit as confirmed by former Wii Homebrew developer crediar.

So, what does this mean for the average user? Not a whole lot. The Wii U has zero Homebrew so far, so if you update to 5.1.1 you’re not immediately missing anything. Though there is the prospects for a future Wii U Homebrew scene, we haven’t seen much activity or interest from Homebrew developers yet so staying on a outdated system version hoping for what may never come isn’t necessary, though it is your choice.

Please keep in mind that if you choose to not update you will lose access to ALL online functions of the Wii U. This includes eShop, Miiverse, Multiplayer in games, and yes, even your favorite video apps like Hulu and Netflix.

One last thing to note is that, as with all previous updates, vWii modding appears to be unaffected (ie you can still use the vWii mod exploits such as Smash Stack if you’re not modded yet, or, if you are, you won’t lose the mod).
